Playing a team in the table with equal points, the Rovers B-team were hoping to prove that they are mid to upper table contenders but sadley today was not their day.
When the game finally kicked off when Wacker couldnt find a match ball the Rovers had the better chances in the first half but were guilty of trying to walk the ball into the net. On a couple of occassions they got into the box, but only at tight angles, so always opted to try and pass rather than shoot.
Bateman had 3/4 shots from outside the area, but the couple that were on target were easily saved by the keeper.
The opposition were limited to hitting long balls over the top of our defence and when a mistake from Stevenson clearing the ball allowed one of their players a clear chance of goal, Simoncini rushed out of goal and performed a fantastic save with his feet for the ball to go out for a corner.
On a sour note, McPhail had to be carried from the field when turning his ankle tracking back in midfield. Replaced by Vidal.
2nd half
With the Sun behind them in the 2nd half the Rovers started to conceed possesion too often in midfield and attack. There were numerous silly fouls by us on the opposition and one such foul on the edge of the box resulted in a freekick which was squared and blasted in. A shot coming through a group of players difficult for the keeper to see and save.
Best chance of the game for the Rovers was a corner hit in by Patton, and a header by Proudfoot at the back post which was directed well but with not enough power to beat the keeper.
Conely replaced Jarvis in midfield.
Proudfoot popped up again with a chance, when some scrappy exchange in their box, left half a chance for the Scotsman to hit high and wide of the target.
Elyada replaced Mcloughlin.
Scrapper Meehan who was taking the long free kicks from midfield, gave up his duties on one such freekick and Proudfoot hit a quality ball to the back post, but Meehans header was directly at the keeper for an easy save.
The "strange" referree who had already given indirect free kicks to the opposition in our box, for shoulder barging and showing studs then decided to blow the final whistle a full 10 mins before the end of the game, because the next games referree asked him, how nice of him!
Yellow cards for Stevenson, Meehan, Harrison, and Jarvis or were they forwarnings? Nobody really knows!
Conclusion: A dissapointing result againt a mid table team, we should be beating if we want to be up near the top of the table. Quite a flat game between 2 average teams, who didnt make any clear cut chances on the deck and only a setpiece decided the game. Thanks for Jan for coming down and sitting on the bench, something ive done a few times too and its no fun.
