A first game as manager for Pete Cullinan, with him promising to bring back the boot room mentality,? was to be against a team playing a number of leagues above the Rovers in the Bezirksoberliga. With the kit being suitable late, to make our scouser? gaffer nervous,? the new old? look Rover AH lineup was revealed.? The Rovers AH welcomed back some new and some old boys with Richie, Charlie and Gavin making the starting line-up.

All discussions before the game were about keeping the score down and trying to knick one. Most of the players were not sure if the gaffer meant a goal or the other team?s wallets as revenge for a previous visit here. The warm up couldn?t have help settle the manager?s nerves as the Rovers lumbered through a tried and tested warm up routine beside a tree on a hill behind the goal. While the opposition did a variety of sprints, ball work and muscle stretches with amazed the on looking rovers.

Right from the off SV Untermenzing attacked the Rovers and were looking to score some early goals and get the game won early. But they rarely threatened as the Rovers midfield and defense tracked their men reducing SV Untermenzing to crosses, which Gavin? The one legged Cat? Carey had no problem dealing with. It was not all one way traffic as Akin and Clare at the other end were arguable more threatening and the Rovers forced a succession of corners? but failed to convert any with Sobek and Proudfoot coming the closest with headers. A pedantic referee gave an indirect free kick to SV Untermenzing? for? some minor rule infringement none of the player knew about. With Murphy charging down the resultant free kick. With both teams surprisingly well matched Walker brough down their number 9 , penalty. Up steps their captain and he drills it into the both right only for the one legged cat to save it and for Sobek to put the rebound out for a corner. This spurred on the Rovers and they created a number of good chances mainly falling to Deadly Dave Akin who managed to spur all of them. He was well on his way to spurring another when he decided to fall over in the opposition box when he was clean through on goal, penalty to the Rovers. Up steps the Rovers resident penalty expert Sobek, we should have known something was up when he missed his penalty in the warm up. He takes his run up, he shoots it goes high into a nearby tree. Which forced a flock of birds to fly further away in case he might gets another penalty later.? ?With half time approaching SV Untermenzing managed to get a scrappy goal which came from a cross which the rovers failed to clear at two attempts before it was forced home.

Half time 1-0 SV Untermenzing. The halftime talk was more positive as the Rovers realized there might be something in the game for them.

Second half started as the first had ended with the Rovers still creating chance and defending very well. Throughout the second half the rovers created the better chances with Davy Kazan missing the best of them from 1 yard maybe 2 yards. Akin and Clare were causing real problems for SV Untermenzing with Charlie, Proudfoot and McPhail were feeding them good balls into feet .

Late on and after a flurry of substitutions SV Untermenzing made it 2-0 as the Rovers pressed on trying to get an equalizer. A cross from the left bounced kindly to their new striker. It looked like between Murphy and the One Legged Cat Carey it was covered but their striker slipped and toe poked in under Murphys outstretched leg into the opposite corner. The screams of delight from SV Untemenzing players and bench told the story of the match in itself. The rovers went 2 at the back and push Luke into midfield and attacked. SV Untermenzing made it 3-0 with a lightening 5 on 2 break from a Rovers corner.
Undeterred the Rovers pressed on looking for a goal their performance deserved? and it finally came from Richie Clare but it was made by the defense splitting pass from John McPhail which put him through one on one.? Sobek managed to hit the bar with a header late on but the game finished 3-1 to SV Untermenzing.

Final Score 3-1

If Carlsberg did Rovers performances then that is probably the best since I have been at the club.

Man of the Match:? Gavin ?One Legged Cat? Carey? but in truth every member of the squad deserves similar praise as we all played very well and might have gotten more from the game if we had a little bit more luck in front of goal.
