On a rainy Sunday afternoon Rovers Bs had to go to Ramersdorf again for their league game against the Argentinians. After some struggles between the Argentinians and their opponents at our home ground last week, the irish-canadian-american-german-russian-rovers hoped not for an upcoming Falkland war.
The best message before the game was no Messi signed up for this one. The pitch was really muddy and slippery so that some difficulties due the ground conditions could be expected. Before the game outhelping manager Pete ? thanks again by the way ? especially pointed out to expect some heavy, raging attacks of the opponents within the first ten minutes. Didn?t help anyway as the rovers must still have been at these tasty jelly beans in their minds and Los Caballeros scored the 1:0 already in the 5th minute. After a corner a totally unmarked South American ? let?s call him Pablo ? scored from the far post. No chance for Gav who did a decent job as keeper this day. After that the rovers had 20 really horrible minutes. The Argentinians ruled the midfield and rovers hardly won any tacklings. The skilled attackers Pablo, Jesus and Javier had some good chances and were only stopped by offside decisions a few times. Paul sorted it out at the back with good effort most of the time. In consequence of all the problems in the beginning the Bs changed their tactics, switching to a 5-3-2 with Paul sweeping, Georg(e) and Aidoo center backs, Timo and Niels wingers. That had a good effort to rovers play. Outgoing from conquering the midfield back the attacks now were played more consequent with better passing and more running by the offensive line. With man marking their two strikers the defense also got the control on their PaJeJa front row. In the 35th minute this worked out for the equalizer as Niels had a breakthrough on the right side into the box where he could only be stopped by holding. Stupid foul, absolutely clear penalty ? even the Argentinians didn?t discuss. Niels took it and missed. Thankfully the keeper could only clear the ball to the middle of the six-yard-box were a desperate Niels still waited and now used his second chance for the equalizer. 1-1 Rovs back in game. With ? now ? a good spirit the Rovers carried on. After a horrible return pass by the weak Centro-right back, Vasily stepped in an scored the 2:1 in ca. 40th minute. Halftime.
Second half is a short, sad story? There must have been something like South American voodoo in halftime as the Rovers came back and didn?t continue their successful play from the end of the first half. For 30 minutes defense wasn?t really in trouble. But the problem was that too many balls either only went out by long kicks to the front were the strikers picked them up mostly in offside or were simply lost in midfield. Anyway there have been some good chance with the most promising missed by Jason who shot over the goal from a 5 m distance. So with time running out the Centros increased their pressure and with a little luck Pablo, Jesus and Javier first scored the equalizer after a free kick and then even took the winner after a counter attack roundabout the 85th minute. Last minutes rovers pushed to get the equalizer but didn?t have good chance anymore. That?s it.
Now the balls only went on out a long way out from the back finding the strikers most time in offside now. No passing around,
A note on the ref: He was not bad and had only a few wrong decisions. Unfortunately one of those led to a free kick which ended in the equalizer. Maybe the winner was an offside goal too, but as an Bachramov did it in 66s WC final you have to accept C-class revs do it too. If we would have scored the third goal all the things would have worked out for us. So the only ones to blame are us!!!
Anyway heads up lads. Next game is upcoming and we should try to continue to play like the week before with an eye on ?play?. With a returning good fighting spirit and positive talking there are still 48 points to gain!!!
MOM: Gav for helping out in goal again
